Nutrifit - Norfolk Project
The Nutrifit Norfolk Project is currently being run with funding support from the Big Lottery - Well Being Fund.
The project aims to improve both the Physical Activity and the Healthy Eating of obese teenagers between the ages of 14-18yrs old in Norfolk.
Physical activity:
To provide weekly physical activity sessions run by qualified coaches to increase participation in everyday sports / general increase in lifestyle activity. By linking in with local sports clubs, should children / adults particularly enjoy a themed sport they will have the contact details to further this to a weekly event / join a club.
Healthy Eating:
To provide activity-based nutrition education sessions run by Paediatric Dietitians regarding changing eating behaviours to follow a more balanced approach. Participants will learn about the different food groups, portion control, meal planning, and understanding food labels; as well as getting the chance to taste new foods and discuss in an open yet secure environment attitudes towards eating and the psychology behind why we choose the foods we eat.
Improving self esteem and confidence
Improvement in mental wellbeing is a big part of the project. By increasing the participants self esteem, and confidence through giving them the knowledge and therefore empowering them to make their own choices regarding eating and exercise. The programme provides a safe environment where friendships can be formed and confidence built.
The main objective of this programme is to provide a community based, non competitive, environment by which individuals can receive evidence based advice, from appropriately qualified specialists.
The programme is currently delivered through a 10 week programme. The group meets on a weekly basis and parents are given the opportunity to attend a group session to up skill their own knowledge regarding nutrition and benefits of regular exercise.
The main aim of the programme is to improve lifestyles and fitness in a way which is fun, interactive and most of all easy to mimic at home.
